Since the early 1990s, cancer rates for African Americans have fallen for men and stayed about the same for women. That’s good news, but cancer’s bad news can come to anyone, at any time. The information here is designed to help you understand cancer in African Americans and, if needed, get the care and treatment you need.

 

Cancer 101



Cancer is a group of many related diseases in which abnormal cells develop, divide uncontrollably and have the ability to infiltrate and destroy normal body tissue. Normally, cells grow and divide to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy. Sometimes, this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should.
